The Pirate Party of Greece officially adopts the Jerusalem Declaration on Antisemitism

Composite image displaying the emblem of the Pirate Party of Greece on the left and the logo of the Jerusalem Declaration on Antisemitism (JDA) on the right.

The Pirate Party of Greece (PPGR), true to the Pirate Ideology’s principles, recognizes the need to clearly and unequivocally fight and condemn antisemitism. Antisemitism has been the basis for many centuries of brutal discrimination and murderous persecution against the Jews, which peaked with the Holocaust.

In our Statutes,[1] we explicitly and unequivocally declare our dedication to the protection of human rights for all, without exceptions and/or conditions – regardless of race, religion, origin, gender identity-expression etc., exactly as dictated by the Universal Declaration of Human Rights of the UN General Assembly and by the European Convention on Human rights. Our stance is reaffirmed in our other fundamental texts: our Founding Declaration,[2] our Prinicples,[3] and the Rethymno Declaration.[4]

We incorporate our fight against antisemitism in our general fight against racism. If humankind must learn one thing from the Holocaust and all other genocides is that “Never Again” must mean “Never Again for Anyone”. To us, human rights are universal, inalienable, and cannot be subject to negotiations. Thus, we are not going to treat the fight against antisemitism as incompatible with, or as competitive to the fight for the rights of the Palestinian people – or any other people.

Furthermore, according to our party’s fundamental texts and the declarations and conventions on human rights we endorse and abide by, we reject the idea of any racially and/or religiously “pure” state as inherently racist, bigoted, and anti-democratic. As a country, we have had a very bitter experience with the fascist slogan «Ελλάς Ελλήνων Χριστιανών» (“Greece of and for Christian Greeks”) of the 1967-1974 Junta led by the Nazi collaborator Georgios Papadopoulos. We reject the idea that political critique of a state’s laws, policies, practicies, ideology, and official rhetoric may be stifled or censored as “racist” by nature. Speech can be racist depending on its content, its targeting, and the context in which it is uttered. Furthermore, to apply the “racist” label to the opposition to racist policies and actions weakens the struggle against racism and makes a mockery of it. Additionally, the Pirate Movement by nature rejects censorship, especially when it aims to protect governments that violate anyone’s basic human rights.

Consequently, we are led to the rejection of the working definition of antisemitism set forth by the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA), because it conflates Jewry with Israel as a state, and antisemitism with legitimate political criticism of the political, diplomatic, legal, and military actions of the state of Israel. In Greece, we have dealt with similar attitudes expressed by our own domestic far right, as it conflates Hellenism with the Greek government and labels “anti-hellenic” and “treasonous” every criticism of the government’s rhetoric, laws, and policies.

Consequently, the Governing Board of the PPGR proposed to the party members, and on 28 July put to a vote, with 2 August being the deadline, the adoption of the Jerusalem Declaration on Antisemitism (JDA).[4] The JDA’s definition and guidelines, in contrast to the IHRA Definition, offer a clear, explicit, and concise framework that leaves no room for misinterpretation, substantially strengthens the fight against racism in general, and antisemitism in particular, and is compatible with the Pirate principles of free speech and critique, as it shields the right to legitimate political criticism of ideas, laws, policies, and practices. The proposal of the Governing Board was unanimously approved by PPGR members.

Thus, the Jerusalem Declaration on Antisemitism is adopted as an official position of the PPGR and will be published shortly in the relevant section of our website and Wiki, in English and Greek. The Greek translation will be posted after its finalization.

The Leadership of The European Pirate Party Casts Doubt on Pirates’ Right to Criticize Party Officials

The Leadership of The European Pirate Party Casts Doubt on Pirates’ Right to Criticize Party Officials

The Pirate Movement is ostensibly a movement that stands for free speech, free criticism, free scrutiny, transparency and accountability of those in power, including party officials. Israel’s genocidal campaign against Gaza, however, laid bare the hypocrisy of the hegemonic powers within our movement. We witnessed some of the highest-ranking officers of the German Pirate Party (Piratenpartei Deutschland – PPDE) adopt and amplify far-right racist and bigoted rhetoric and conspiracy theories against the Palestinians and Muslims in general, as well as falsehoods against UNRWA and the International Criminal Court.

We witnessed in disbelief, dismay, and horror the deafening silence of the European Pirate Party (PPEU) and the Pirate Parties International (PPI) as this genocide unfolded, as tens of thousands of unarmed Palestinian civilians, with the majority being women and children, were massacred and maimed; as doctors, nurses, medics, rescue teams, humanitarian aid workers, journalists were murdered, abducted, and tortured; as foreign journalists, academics, artists, politicians who dared call for a ceasefire, who dared say that Palestinians are human beings were brutalized, defamed, cancelled, sacked from their jobs, arrested, harassed, exiled. Despite all the evidence, despite all that has transpired, the PPEU and the PPI chose to act as if nothing was happening or as if what was happening did not matter.

This is, of course, no coincidence. It is no secret that both entities are controlled by parties that are completely aligned with the far-right Israeli apartheid regime and have fully adopted its narrative. We Pirates love to boast that we are all about “evidence-based politics”. Yet, the powers that be in the PPEU and the PPI choose to disregard and dismiss the mounting evidence that the situation Palestinians have been placed in since the Nakba of 1948 is a brutal apartheid; that the occupation of the Palestinian territories is illegal; that the Palestinians are subjected to a legal system that treats them as second-class subjects and that they are citizens only in name; that Israel subjects them to arbitrary detentions and tortures them; that Israel’s government officials and prominent TV anchors call for a genocide, even for employing gas chambers[1] against the Palestinians.

This conduct of the PPEU and the PPI should come as no surprise; in the three-part “Quo Vaditis, Piratae?” series of official statements from our Governing Board, available in both Greek[2][3][4] and English,[5][6][7] we have documented, detailed, and highlighted a number of serious pathogenies and failings of our movement’s European and International bodies, as well as certain disgraceful incidents involving the PPEU’s “locomotive”, the PPDE. It must be noted here that, without the tolerance and – yes – complicity of other PPEU and PPI member parties, things would have been completely different. The sad reality is that none of the PPEU and the PPI’s Board members have had the rectitude and fortitude to take a stand. There seems to be a tacit agreement for Pirates to either stay silent in the face of unethical, unbecoming of a Pirate, behaviour and blatant deviations from humanitarian principles or resign.

Indeed, many high-profile, esteemed Pirates left the Pirate Movement because they could no longer tolerate behaviours like the ones we mentioned: Andrew Norton, Martin Delius, Felix Reda,[8] Florie Marie, Birgitta Jnsdóttir, Mikuláš Peksa, and so on. The ones who allowed, enabled, or even orchestrated the ethical and political decline remained and, infuriatingly, were essentially rewarded.

This brings us to the situation in Gaza and the rest of the illegally Occupied Palestinian Territories. The Boards of the PPEU and the PPI seem to treat the illegal occupation as legal, which is in and of itself a violation of resolutions of the UN General Assembly and UN Security Council. PPDE officials like Schoresch Davoodi even praised conservative German Chancellor Friedrich Merz’ intention to ignore the ICC’s arrest warrant against war criminal Netanyahu, shunning Germany’s obligations under international law.

As far as we are concerned, we did not stay silent. Furthermore, we filed a motion to the Council of the PPEU to condemn this genocide.[9] We were stonewalled with pathetic excuses, such as the claim that we cannot join the ever-growing throng of experts who speak of genocide, because Israel has not been convicted; or the notion that condemning Israel’s actions would somehow help Hamas, Iran or… Putin. And we are not even discussing the procedural abnormalities and violations that were employed by the Board of the PPEU to sabotage our motion. Frank Wijnans, the leader of the Dutch Pirate Party (Piratenpartij Nederlands – PPNL) and Mark Anthony van Treuren, its foreign policy officer, even went as far as to accuse us of “supporting terrorism” and “bullying” the European Pirate Party. They were duly called out for these actions on social media, by our own official account, i.e. by our Governing Board, not just by individual members. Later, on 12 May 2025, a group of PPNL politicians, led by Catharina Bethlehem and Matthijs Pontier, the PPNL ballot’s top candidate, moved to publish a statement condemning the genocide in Gaza and the silence surrounding it; this statement, however, had not been adopted as official party position.[10]

On 8 May 2025, we saw that Mr. Florian Roussel, chairperson of the PPEU, initiated a vote to refer one of our members to the PPEU’s Code of Conduct Committee for the “crime” of publicly calling party officials out for their public unethical behavior and for their public actions that have harmed the Pirate Movement, its reputation, and its credibility.[11] Mr. Roussel claims that public criticism of public behavior constitutes a “violation of privacy” and that it basically causes “emotional distress” to those criticized.

We have to inform Mr. Roussel and everyone in the PPEU’s Board and in the other Pirate parties of Europe that:

  • alignment with a belligerent, racist, far-right regime is a violation of Pirate principles, even considering the neo-Lepenist “ni droite, ni gauche“[12][13] dogma that has played a pivotal role in the methodic and systematic ideological and moral derailment of our movement;
  • alignment with a corrupt government that seeks, Orbán-, Trump-, Putin-, and Mitsotakis-like, to control and manipulate the judiciary is a violation of Pirate principles;
  • alignment with an illegal occupation force is a violation of Pirate principles;
  • alignment with an apartheid regime is a violation of Pirate principles;
  • alignment with a government that imposes censorship of the Press domestically and internationally and, like Putin, proscribes, threatens, and persecutes its critics internationally is a violation of Pirate principles;
  • adopting and amplifying racist, dehumanizing rhetoric and justifications for ethnic cleansing and genocide is a violation of Pirate principles;
  • no one is exempted from criticism, private or public, for their public speech and actions;
  • being mentioned by name for something one said in public and with their official capacity as a politician is no violation of their privacy;
  • one can no longer expect to be taken seriously when they claim to be all about free speech, opinion and expression, when, in a vulgar display of anti-democratic, censorious, and unpirate attitude, they seek disciplinary action against Pirates, or even the general public, for criticizing violations and actions harmful to the Pirate Movement and/or incompatible with basic ethics, basic humanity, the Pirate Ideology;
  • it is actions like the ones officially outlined by our party and individually by our members that reduced the PPDE to practical non-existence (0.03% in the 2025 German federal election) and cost the PPEU three of its four European Parliament seats;
  • apartheid is Nazism, as Alpha Blondy had put it so succinctly – so is condoning, enabling, white/pinkwashing, justifying, and supporting it;
  • accusing others of “supporting terrorism” because they recognize Palestinians (who seem to be viewed as Untermenschen by the Global North) as human beings whose rights must be respected is far worse than the fictitious “emotional distress” abusers suffer when others point out their public and well-documented failings;
  • if someone is so thin-skinned, undemocratic, unpirate, and arrogant that, like Trump, Orbán, Putin, and Mitsotakis, they seek to punish, stifle, and censor criticism for what they say in public and for their public actions (especially with Mitsotakis-style passive-aggressive, gaslighting techniques such as claiming that criticism is “emotional violence” and “bullying”), they should stay out of politics altogether – and most certainly have no right whatsoever to be called a Pirate.

We, the Pirate Party of Greece, inform Mr. Roussel and the Board of the PPEU that the accusations he is referring to in his initiative are not made by “one member of the PPGR”; we unequivocally, unanimously, and officially call these officials out for their unethical and unpirate actions, as well as their fanatical support for a genocidal apartheid regime.

We inform him and the Board of the PPEU that we unequivocally, unanimously, and officially stand by not only our members who go out of their way to amplify our voice, but also everyone who is targeted for exercising their right to speak truth to power – Pirate or not.

What Mr. Roussel is doing here, violating every single democratic principle, is precisely this: an attempt to remove Pirates’ right to hold their leadership accountable. If Mr. Roussel wishes to force us, our members, and other Pirates into silence and make us Netanyahu’s accomplices, accomplices in war crimes and crimes against humanity, we refuse. If Mr. Roussel wishes to remove Pirates’ freedom of speech, opinion, expression, and criticism, we inform him that he is in blatant and clear violation of every single Pirate principle, and we unequivocally, unanimously, and officially condemn his censorious and dangerous initiative. On 1 June 2025, we are holding our 12th Congress. Mr. Roussel’s undemocratic, unpirate move, along with its implications, political, moral, and legal, shall be discussed there, along with everything we have witnessed so far in the PPEU and the PPI. Everything shall be laid bare before our members, who shall decide and determine our future relationship with the PPEU and the PPI – if there can be one. What is certain is that we are not going to follow Mr. Roussel and his supporters in this anti-democratic decline, or offer them any kind of legitimization.

We state that the Pirate Party of Greece has absolutely nothing to apologize or explain itself for. We consistently, unequivocally, unanimously, and in the most official manner stand for peace, human rights, democracy, transparency, accountability. We stand for a truly equal, rules-based international order. For everyone, regardless of color, race, origin or creed. We deplore and denounce those “Pirates” who are bringing infamy to the Pirate Movement by aligning themselves with racism and bigotry, with genocidal, dehumanizing rhetoric and far-right, totalitarian, Jim Crow-style regimes that pose an existential threat not only to populations whose lands they illegally occupy, but also to their neighboring countries. When even the conservative editorial board of the Financial Times condemns the West for its complicity in this genocide,[15] there are no excuses. There can be no spurious claims of “self-defense”, no amoral justifications derived from the obscene Realpolitik playbook that has plunged the world into a state of perpetual war, no Orwellian twisting of the meaning of words, and no daft theories about how “condemnation of Israel’s crimes would help Hamas/Iran/Putin”.

Furthermore, we have to remind Mr. Roussel, the Boards of the PPEU and the PPI, and everyone else that Pirates believe in diversity, equality, equity, inclusion, and social justice for all – regardless of color, race, origin, or creed. Pirates reject the notion of a racially and religiously homogeneous ethno-state. Pirates are not 4chan/8chan-grade trolls like the callous, racist, sadistic, and machiavellian “UK Lawyers for Israel” pressure group, who had the insolence to claim that Israel’s starvation of Gaza will “reduce obesity” among Palestinians.[15] Pirates do not apply double standards. Pirates do not accept the racist notion that any ethnic or religious group may be viewed as less worthy than any other. Pirates do not accept the notion that any genocide or ethnic cleansing can be excusable, justifiable, acceptable or tolerable, regardless of pretext. Pirates have always rejected the misanthropic cynicism of Realpolitik. Finally, if there is anything that the world ought to have learned from the Holocaust, it is that “Never Again” means “Never Again for ANYONE.”

Hands off, Mr. Trump!

Το έμβλημα του Κόμματος Πειρατών Ελλάδας - The Logo of the Pirate Party of Greece

In another display of insolence and bravado, the convicted felon Donald Trump decided to start ordering European businesses to disobey EU labor and anti-discrimination laws. The US government has precisely zero competence and authority over the European Union, its member-states, and European businesses’ compliance with EU law. In other words, the convicted felon has no right whatsoever to order any nation’s businesses to violate existing national, supranational, and international law.

Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) practices are solid recruitment and Human Resources (HR) tools that have been beneficial to businesses, universities, and organizations: they have helped them discover, gain, retain and utilize talent that would otherwise be overlooked and underutilized due to biases that have everything to do with potential employees’ color, sex, gender, and wealth, and nothing to do with how skilled or talented they really are. DEI is a competitive advantage that EU should fully embrace, instead of crippling its businesses by bowing down to Trump and his unhinged cabinet in their racist, bigoted, sexist, destructive “culture wars”.

Trump, a conman who has bankrupted every business he’s ever touched, is in no position to talk about best practices in hiring. What he really wants to do is make hiring racist, racist, and bigoted again – like himself. It’s bad enough that he’s undoing decades of work against exclusionary, racist, sexist practices in business hiring in the United States. His attempt to order European businesses about is beyond disgusting and must be rejected by Europe in the strongest way possible.

We, the Pirate Party of Greece, unequivocally condemn the United States’ interventionism; we condemn all of Trump’s allies in Greece and all over Europe; we call for EU regulatory organizations and businesses to ignore Trump’s illogical and outrageous demands; and call upon every democratic and humanist citizen, every rational professional, every EU enterprise, small and large, and every pro-democracy political party to unite against this out-of-control dictator and his goons.

Uprooting Neo-LePenism from The Pirate Movement

Several pirate ships laboring in a stormy sea near a cliff face.

In 2023, the 11th Congress of The Pirate Party of Greece approved a major update of its Statutes, taking significant steps towards clarifying our party’s ideological identity and giving it a clearly progressive direction. Among the amendments approved by the party’s Congress was the removal, from both the Statutes and the Founding Declaration, of the historically and politically illiterate reference that we do not place ourselves on the “obsolete” Left-Center-Right axis. This reference is a maxim that has hobbled the entire Pirate Movement since its beginning, as it still enjoys a fatwa-like status for most Pirate parties. Most Pirate parties’ leaderships still believe it gives them some sort of “flexibility” regarding the policies (especially fiscal ones) they will endorse in each political context, citing their desire to have a “context-dependent appeal”.

This, however, has been proven to be a misguided approach. For starters, as has been repeatedly pointed out to us, both by outside political analysts and by party members familiar with European political history, this maxim is suspiciously similar to the French slogan “ni droite, ni gauche” (neither left nor right). This slogan was adopted and used prominently by the infamous and conniving French neo-fascist politician Jean-Marie Le Pen for his own party, the Front National, later rebranded as Rassemblement National. For many years, there were ample warnings by knowledgeable political commentators that this common element between our movement and the French fascist party would be harmful, not only regarding how our movement would be perceived by progressive citizens, but also regarding what elements it would attract. Indeed, we saw prominent Pirates resign from their national Parties and abandon our movement citing their leaderships’ unwillingness to tackle the incursion of Holocaust deniers, Gamergaters, racists, homotransphobes, alt-right grifters, islamophobes, and so on. In some cases, these elements managed to take over the parties they infected and turn their vile agenda into official party line.

By prioritizing this ill-conceived “flexibility” over the universal humanitarian, egalitarian, and democratic values the Pirate Movement ostensibly espouses, the Pirate parties that have chosen to cling to the “ni droite, ni gauche” slogan like limpets to a rock injected the venom of neo-LePenism into the Pirate Movement. This is how the aforementioned far-right factions managed to hijack various national Pirate parties. Once they had achieved this, they could derail he Pirate Movement from the progressive hacker ideals that were born in 2600: The Hacker Quarterly and spawned the Free and Open Source Software movement and the movement for the protection of individual and civil liberties in cyberspace. These factions turned our movement’s official declarations of adherence to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union, and the European Convention on Human Rights into empty, meaningless words, drowned by a cesspool of anti-feminist, anti-diversity, anti-equity, anti-inclusion, racist, genocidal, pro-Apartheid, pro-censorship rhetoric, taken from notorious sources of neo-fascist messaging and disinformation, like “Dr. Maalouf”, Peter “Sweden” Imanuelsen, Viségrad24, and Radio Genoa.

One might point out that the “ni droite, ni gauche” slogan was also used by “centrist” French President Emmanuel Macron  in his campaign, but this does nothing to overshadow its most (in)famous use. As a matter of fact, it only adds fuel to the fire, as Macron is notoriously averse to democracy. He is well-known for his violent crackdown on protests against his neoliberal fiscal policies; we Pirates remember his horse-trading with the German government to pass Articles 15 and 17 (formerly 11 and 13, respectively) of the EU Copyright Directive [(EU) 2019/790] that was uncovered by Felix Reda, the best politician our movement ever had. More recently, we remember him for causing a snap election, citing the dangerous rise of the fascist Marine Le Pen. And then, he conspired with Le Pen to install an unpopular, obsessive, and incompetent electoral loser as Prime Minister, sidestepping the popular vote, which favored the Left. If anything, the use of this particular slogan by Macron makes him a neo-LePenist; it does not make the slogan less politically repulsive.

Contrary to what has been shamelessly claimed by some, the Pirate Ideology is not a vague, nebulous concept that can somehow be made compatible with sexist, patriarchal, alt-right, white supremacist, neo-colonialist, anti-woke policies. It is a concrete ideological framework that promotes democracy, the rule of law, equality, equity, inclusion, freedom, social justice, peace, and safety for everyone, regardless of skin color, place of birth, religion, financial status, or political beliefs. To stay focused on these goals, we need to keep our political vision perfectly clear. Thus, we must close once and for all the backdoors that allowed the far right’s venom to find its way into our movement, and this is precisely what we did in 2023.

True to the Pirate ideals, we are not going to stop there. Instead, we intend to continue our work to clarify and re-establish the vision of the Pirate Movement and restore its relevance and credibility. The Pirate Movement is inherently and innately progressive, democratic, egalitarian, and grassroots. Its true place is with the global progressive forces, from center-left and beyond; not with anti-democratic, reactionary forces like the European People’s Party and its far-right crutches. We know there are many Pirates around the world who share our desire to rebuild and recalibrate our movement. We cordially invite them to come with us so we can fight to curb the neo-fascist menace that threatens to undo every conquest in the field of human, civil, social, labor rights and freedoms, that threatens to destroy any sense of rule of law and any notion of democracy.
